Expand and strengthen life sciences industry in Austria through research funding and national and international networking

The Life Sciences Call 2023 provides support for research and development projects, clinical studies or lead projects with smaller and larger project volumes. The funding ceilings are € 3 million in the case of corporate projects and clinical trials, and between € 2 million to a maximum of € 4 million for the lead project. The amount of the grant depends on the type of organization and the research category (see table on this page). The call in 2023 is limited to one project per research category per organization. A total of 50 million euros is available for grants from 2022 to 2023. Funding decisions will be made at specific cut-off dates.

What is funded?
Funding is available for R&D company projects (industrial research, experimental development) of Austrian companies that deal with the following topics:

  • Digitalization of health aspects (diagnostics, telemedicine, medical devices, etc.)
  • new, effective, high-quality and safe, as well as available and affordable drugs and medical devices
  • Planning and execution of interventional clinical studies of phases I and II

In addition, lead projects in the area of “Clinical research for novel solutions to health and disease data” are supported.

All costs attributable to the project (e.g. personnel costs, costs for the use of R&D infrastructure, material and equipment costs, travel costs up to and including third-party costs) that are incurred directly, actually and in addition to the conventional operating expenses during the funding period according to the funding agreement are eligible for funding.
